How the winter readiness score works
Each unfinished task adds risk points weighted by how costly the failure could be: frozen pipes and furnace breakdowns weigh the most, followed by roof problems, ice dams, untested carbon monoxide alarms and falling limbs. Scores up to 25 are low risk, 26 to 55 moderate and above 55 high.
Frequently asked questions
When should I winterize my Ohio home?
Aim for October through mid-November, before the first hard freeze. Book furnace service and gutter cleaning early, because pros get busy.
What's the most expensive winter problem to ignore?
Frozen and burst pipes. A small split can release hundreds of gallons. Disconnect hoses, shut off outdoor spigots and keep the heat at 55°F or higher when you travel.
How do I prevent ice dams?
Keep gutters clean, add attic insulation and ventilation so the roof deck stays cold, and make sure ice and water shield was installed along the eaves.
