How the tree risk score works
Tree risk combines the chance of failure (dead wood, cracks, rot, a new lean, and ash trees, which Ohio's emerald ash borer has devastated) with what the tree could hit. A weak tree over a house scores much higher than one in an open yard. Scores above 55 mean you should call a tree service or arborist soon.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a tree is dangerous?
Warning signs include large dead branches, deep cracks in the trunk, mushrooms or rot at the base, a new or worsening lean, and roots lifting the soil.
Who is responsible if my tree falls on a neighbor's house?
It depends on the situation and your insurance policy. Generally, owners can be responsible if they knew or should have known a tree was hazardous. Ask your insurer and keep records of tree care.
Should I hire a certified arborist?
For large or valuable trees, yes. An ISA Certified Arborist can assess risk and recommend pruning, cabling or removal.
