A furnace that quits in January is an emergency in Ohio. Deciding between a repair and a replacement before the cold arrives saves money and stress.
Use the $5,000 rule
Multiply the age of your furnace by the repair quote. If the total is over $5,000, replacement usually makes more sense. A 16-year-old furnace with a $400 repair works out to $6,400, so lean toward replacing it.
Typical costs
- Furnace repair: about $150–$600 for common fixes such as igniters, flame sensors and blower motors.
- New gas furnace: often $3,500–$7,500 installed, depending on efficiency and ductwork.
- Full HVAC system (furnace + AC): about $6,000–$14,000.
Signs it’s time to replace
- The furnace is 15+ years old.
- You’ve needed repairs in each of the last two winters.
- Gas bills keep rising even though your usage hasn’t changed.
- Some rooms are always too cold or too warm.
- The tech mentions a cracked heat exchanger, which can leak carbon monoxide.
Before you buy
- Ask for a Manual J load calculation so the system is sized correctly.
- Compare 80% and 95%+ efficiency models; high-efficiency units pay back faster in Ohio’s long heating season.
- Ask about utility and manufacturer rebates. The federal energy-efficiency tax credit (25C) ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025.
- Get at least two written quotes.
