How we decide repair or replace
We start with the $5,000 rule (age × repair cost), which counts for up to half the score, then add points for frequent repairs, rising energy bills, comfort problems and R-22 refrigerant. Up to 35 favors repairing, 36 to 60 is a judgment call worth a second opinion, and above 60 favors replacing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the $5,000 rule for HVAC?
Multiply the system's age by the repair quote. If the result is over $5,000, replacing usually makes more financial sense than repairing.
How long do furnaces and AC units last?
Gas furnaces often last 15 to 20 years; central air conditioners and heat pumps usually last 12 to 15 years in Ohio.
Is R-22 refrigerant still available?
R-22 production ended in 2020, so recharging an old system is expensive. A leaking R-22 system is usually a strong reason to replace.
