How the basement water risk score works
Past water and structural signs (cracks, bowing walls) carry the most weight, followed by drainage around the house: downspouts, grading and your sump pump. Scores up to 25 are low risk, 26 to 55 are moderate, and above 55 are high risk, especially in Ohio's wet spring months.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my basement get water after heavy rain?
Usually because water pools near the foundation: clogged gutters, short downspouts or soil that slopes toward the house. Hydrostatic pressure then pushes it through cracks and the floor-wall joint.
What is the white powder on my basement walls?
That's efflorescence, mineral deposits left behind when water moves through concrete or block. It's a sign moisture is getting in.
How much does basement waterproofing cost?
Simple fixes like downspout extensions cost under $100. Crack injection runs a few hundred dollars per crack, and interior drain tile with a sump pump often runs $5,000 to $15,000.
