How the electrical safety score works
Warning signs you can see or smell (warm outlets, flickering, burning odors) and known problem panels carry the most weight, followed by frequent tripping, older wiring, ungrounded outlets and missing GFCI protection. Any score above 55, or any burning smell, means you should call a licensed electrician promptly.
Frequently asked questions
Which electrical panels are considered hazardous?
Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) and Zinsco panels have well-documented breaker failure problems. Many insurers and home inspectors flag them for replacement.
Is a warm outlet dangerous?
Yes. Warm or discolored outlets and switches, burning smells or buzzing can mean loose connections that can start a fire. Stop using it and call an electrician.
Do Ohio electricians need a license?
Electrical contractors in Ohio are licensed by the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board, and most panel and wiring work requires a permit.
